2019. Week 5!

Thanks to everyone who came today for the Spring Open House! We had a fabulous day! Tag me in your social media posts! @buzbyfarm I love to see your photos.

New this week:

Kirby pickles-  Many people really enjoy Kirby pickles because they have less and smaller seeds than your traditional cuke.  Use them atop our salad or make a quick refrigerator pickle.  Here is a recipe from "A Couple Cooks".

Escarole- Escarole is a bitter green from the chicory family.  Link to my escarole soup recipe.
Other escarole recipes:

Cabbage- This is a great variety that has tender leaves that are very sweet and crisp -  perfect for coleslaw or stir-fries. One of my families favorite ways to eat cabbage is Egg Roll in a bowl.

2016 week 5

New this week:

Kirby pickles - you can use these just like cucumbers, but they are especially great for pickling. Here is a link to a great refrigerator pickle.

Sugar Snap Peas are so delicious eaten raw. Or added to a stir fry. The snap peas are a pick-your-own crop for those picking up at the farm.  Come ready to take a 100 yard walk to the field and spend a little time picking.

Zucchini is such a versatile vegetable!  Our family's all time favorite recipe is Stuffed Zucchini, check it out here, it is THE best!  What will you make with yours? zucchini bread, zucchini "crab" cakes", minestrone with zucchini, grill it, roast it!

Kohlrabi, swiss chard, garlic scapes are back and looking good. We are squeezing another week out of the strawberry patch. Yay!

Saturday was a beautiful day for a farm tour and pick your own strawberries.  Thank you to all who came and helped make it a great day.  If you missed it we are sorry, and hope you can make it next year!

Some of you requested the cake recipe. . .

Kentucky Butter Cake (actually there is no butter in this recipe. . . it's all margarine)

3 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup margarine, softened
2 tsp. vanilla
4 eggs
Heat oven 325F.  Grease and flour two loaf pans.  Mix  all ingredients until moist.  Beat 3 minutes at medium speed.  Pour into 2 pans evenly.  Bake 60-70 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean.  When the cake comes out of the oven poke a bunch of holes in the cake with a wooden skewer. Pour glaze slowly over cakes.  Let the cake cool completely before taking out of pans.

Glaze
In a small saucepan melt :
3/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup margarine
3 Tablespoons water
Take off the heat and add 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla.

2015 week 6

This week A.T. Buzby Farm was honored at the local FFA banquet for our support of FFA, its mission, and members.  FFA does a great job growing leaders for the agricultural industry and our communities.  We currently employ four current/past FFA state officers.  They are enthusiastic workers.  The future looks bright for New Jersey Agriculture.

Returning from previous weeks:
Romaine is back and looking so good!
Purple top turnips just the root.
Kirby pickles, probably their last week.

New this week:
Zucchini- such a versatile vegetable!  Our family's all time favorite recipe is Stuffed Zucchini, check it out here, it is THE best!
Yellow Squash- Saute it up with the onion in your share!
Spring Onion- The variety of onion we grew is called " CANDY". The perfect sweet onion.
Fennel-With the flavor of sweet anise, fennel is a great addition in soups, pasta, salads, and more.  To be honest fennel is completely new to me!  If you know and love fennel please reach out to me on Facebook or email and let me know your favorite way to prepare it.  I am planning to try this recipe later this week.

Kirby pickles//you can use these just like cucumbers, but they are especially great for pickling. Here is a link to a great refrigerator pickle.

Garlic Scapes// We are so excited to have garlic scapes in the share this week from our friends and neighbors Obis One.   Garlic scapes are the tender stem found on a garlic plant. Use your garlic scapes raw in salads and they will have a hot peppery flavor. Cooked garlic scapes will have a mellow, sweeter flavor.  Here is a link to a garlic scape salad dressing

Kohlrabi// I know this is a weird one.  But trust me, it is good and easy to use.

CSA Share week 6, 2012

Week six brings blueberries and string beans, along with romaine, zucchini, yellow squash, and pickles!!!  The blueberries are from "The Blueberry Capital of the World", Hammonton, NJ.  Everything else is straight from our farm.  I've got 2 fantastic recipes coming your way to help with the abundant squash harvest.

We are busy bees at the farm. Today we planted the 2nd field of watermelon, planted more corn, pulled weeds in the peppers and onions, laid plastic for the 4th tomato field, picked, packed and shipped 400 bushels of pickles, and seeded the pumpkins.

CSA Share 2012: week 4

What a week we have had!  The constant threat of thunderstorms, that never amounted to anything, followed by high heat and humidity! Whew! But it was great weather if you were hanging by the pool, ocean, or lake!  The eggplants are loving this heat wave too!  Sadly, the strawberries despise this heat and humidity.  The berries are limping along so you CSA members can come U-pick on Saturday.

Even though the strawberries are out of the picture
Here are 4 reasons why I am SUPER DUPER EXCITED about this weeks share.

#1 Broccoli and Cauliflower--   We planted broccoli in the csa field 2 years ago, and got nothing, nada, zilch.  This spring I got the urge to try growing these cruciferous veggies again.  I tried to be optimistic, but I really was anticipating another flop.  Just look at those beauties! Yummy, yummy!

#2 Spinach-- Spinach is another on of those things that we have been trying to grow with little success for the past few years.  Last years spinach I got from a neighbor.  This year I am proud to announce that this was grown on our farm right next to the turnips. We leads me to #3

#3 Turnips--  I love that part of the whole CSA experience is trying new things.  Turnips fall in the "new things" category for many of our members.  I have this Turnip souffle recipe that will knock your socks off.  Sidenote*** You can eat the turnip greens too! These are the most beautiful turnip greens I have seen in a while!

#4 Pickle Cucs--  I love pickles I eat them right out of the field and so does Auggie Dog

Oh yeah, the asparagus and kholrabi is pretty cool too!
